[Odb-help] a brief update: VNC with ODB

Dear ODB users:

There have not been a lot of ODB questions recently,
but there are a few developments worth reporting:

1. October 2003 is setting a record for ODB downloads. We had
under 400 downloads of the software in September and we will
almost certainly reach 800 downloads this month!

2. Our intern, Ryan Green of Wentworth Institute for Technology,
has been testing out the "remote use" of ODB. What this
means is that he is using the free VNC software for remotely
controlling a computer (this is similar to PCAnywhere or Timbuktu
or GotoMyPC.com, but it is free) so that someone (one user at
a time) could access their ODB database, and all their other files,
      when on the road.

VNC can even be used on a MAC/PC local area network, to
allow you to view the desktop of one of the PCs and run ODB
      from the Mac!

We are happy to help the first couple of people who want to
try this, for free, on the days Ryan is in (Tues/Wed.). You
must have an installation of ODB that is accessible on a cable
modem or through a commonly available router (i.e. linksys or
netgear) on your internal local network. The computer outside
your office could be of any type; a 56K modem will allow
you to look up records but is too slow for getting real work done.
We would also be able to help you if you want to try using ODB
      from a Mac.

We should have a lot more news to report later this week!
